Mode Selection Buttons

As discussed in the section on Mapper Modes the Control Manager has three operating modes (not to be confused with the Program Modes that can be used to assign multiple functions to each control in the map). These three modes which are controlled by three buttons on the Tool Bar. The modes are "Off Mode", "Direct Mode", and "Mapped Mode" and they determine how the controller will operate in Windows. Note that for "Mapped Mode" to become active a valid map must have been downloaded to the Control Manager. Also, when you download a map, the Control Manager automatically switches to Mapped Mode and the map is active as a result.

"Off Mode" Button

The Off Mode button looks like this:

In this mode, the controllers are all disabled and none of them will show up in the Windows Game Controllers applet.

"Direct Mode" Button

The Direct Mode button looks like this:

In Direct Mode, the devices appear in the Game Controllers applet under their own name and operate as they would if the Control Manager were not installed and the default Windows drivers were used.

"Mapped Mode" Button

The "Mapped Mode" button looks like this:

In Mapped Mode, the map is active and whatever Control Manager Devices it defines will be active in the Windows Game Controllers Applet.

Mode Indication

The three Mode Buttons are also used to indicate the mode in which the Control Manager is currently operating. The button that corresponds to the current mode will have a bright blue highlight around the blue box toward the top of the button. For example, if the Control Manager is operating in Mapped Mode, the Mapped Mode Button will look like this:

Together with the information about the last downloaded file available on the Status Panel, you can tell at a glance what file is loaded and whether or not it is currently active.

Disabled Mode Button

Under certain conditions, the Mode buttons may appear "grayed out" and will be disabled. Specifically, if the Control Manager cannot detect any CH devices it will disable all three of the Mode buttons. If you should see that and your controllers are plugged in, probably you need to start the calibration via the Test/Calibrate button on the GUI toolbar which causes the Control Manager to rescan for devices. This can be necessary the first time Windows is restarted after installation as Windows may rearrange the ordering of the controllers at that time. It can also happen if you plug the controllers into different ports than the ones they were originally connected to.

Another situation where a Mode button is disabled occurs when you first install the Control Manager. Until you actually download a map, there is no map that can be activated. Consequently, the third Mode button, "Mapped Mode" will be disabled. As soon as you successfully download a map, the button will become active and from then on you can activate the last map that was downloaded by simply clicking the Mapped Mode button.
