Using the Controller Wizard

Many games only recognize a single controller so using multiple devices requires that the controllers be "combined" to form a single device that Windows will see. The Controller Wizard automates this task for you to a degree.

When you start the Controller Wizard, a dialog will appear which looks like this:

This dialog lets you set an upper limit on the number of axes and buttons the Wizard will use when creating the combined controller. The reason for this is that some games will not operate correctly when the encounter a controller with too many buttons or axes. MechWarrior 4 is probably the most common game that has this problem. It will crash to the desktop if it encounters a controller with 32 buttons.

On the right side of the dialog are two boxes, one for setting the maximum number of axes and the other for setting the maximum number of buttons. To set the limits, simply highlight one of the selections in each box. Keep in mind that these are limiting values. In many cases the Wizard can't actually create a controller with as many axes or buttons as you specify. For example specifying 8 axes when only a FlightStick and ProPedals are present. It does no harm to specify more than can be created though, so in general it's best to start with 8 axes and 32 buttons and then reduce them only if the game has problems.

Once the selections have been made, click "Okay" and the Wizard will combine the controllers to form a single virtual device. If the included devices have more axes or buttons available than the limits that you have set, the extra axes and buttons will be set to "Programmed Mode" for sending characters, but no characters will actually be assigned. It's worth noting that there is nothing special about the map that's created. The Wizard does most of the busy work in making the most common axis and button assignments to CM Device 1 and in clearing the remaining axes and buttons, but you free to edit the map to suit your own tastes.
